緊接 上一講 看看“忍耐和接受”的英語怎么表達(dá)。

1. endure : to accept or be forced to accept a very unpleasant or difficult situation for a long time

備注:常見于書面語中

例:

We endured the lecture for as long as we could. (這個(gè)演講我們盡量撐著聽下去。)

The people in this country have endured almost a decade of economic hardship. (這個(gè)國家的人民經(jīng)歷了將近 10 年的經(jīng)濟(jì)困難時(shí)期。)

2. take/handle : to accept an unpleasant situation or someone's unpleasant behavior without becoming upset

備注:這是較口語化的用法。

例:

Careful what you say - he can't take criticism. (慎言,他受不了批評(píng)之言。)

I've tried to be understanding, but quite honestly, this is more than I can take. (我試著包容理解,但是老實(shí)說,這件事我不能接受。)

Are you going to argue with me, or are you just going to stand there and take it? (你要跟我吵?還是就站那兒聽完,并接受這個(gè)事實(shí)?)

I insist you come to my party, and I won't take no for an answer. (我誠邀你來我的派對(duì),不許你推辭?。?

Tell me what happened - I can handle it. (告訴我發(fā)生了什么事,不管你說什么我都可以接受?。?

3. live with : to accept an unpleasant situation as a permanent part of your life that you cannot change

例:

You have to learn to live with stress. (你得學(xué)著承受壓力。)

You have to learn to live with other people's mistakes. (你得學(xué)著包容別人的過失。)

I found the burden of guilt very difficult to live with. (我覺得負(fù)罪感讓人很難承受。)

Because there was no cure, he had to learn to live with the pain. (因?yàn)檫@是絕癥,所以他只好學(xué)著忍受病痛。)

None of us really like the new system, but we've got to learn to live with it. (沒人真心喜歡這個(gè)新系統(tǒng),但我們得學(xué)著接受它。)

live with yourself (=accept something bad or wrong that you have done)

You should be careful before you do anything rash. Remember, you'll have to live with yourself afterwards. (三思而后行,別魯莽。你記住,你永遠(yuǎn)得自己承擔(dān)所有結(jié)果。)

4. grin and bear it : to accept something that you do not like because you have no choice

備注:該詞常用于口語中。

例:

Well, I said to myself, I'll just have to grin and bear it. (我告訴自己,我只要欣然接受就好。)

I don't agree with their decision, but all I can do is to grin and bear it. (我不同意他們的決定,但我也只能欣然接受。)

The message was clear - no matter how insulting passengers became, we couldn't do anything but grin and bear it. (條子上說得很明白,不論乘客如何出言侮辱,我們也只能一笑置之。)

5. stomach : to accept or experience (something unpleasant) without being sick, upset, etc.

備注:這里的 ''stomach'' 做動(dòng)詞使用。

例:

His behavior is hard to stomach sometimes. (有時(shí)他的行為讓人無法容忍。)

I can barely stomach the smell. (我?guī)缀跏懿涣诉@味道。)

He really can't stomach the sight of blood. (他完全見不得流血。)
