1. belong to: if something belongs to someone, they own it

例:

This watch belonged to my grandfather. (這是我爺爺?shù)谋?。?/span>

Who does that Walkman belong to? (那個(gè)隨身聽(tīng)是誰(shuí)的?)

A car believed to belong to the bank robbers was found abandoned yesterday. (昨天找到一輛被棄的車,警方斷定是那起銀行搶劫案劫匪的車。)

2. be the property of: to belong to someone - often written on books, clothes etc. to show who owns them

備注:"be the property of"是正式的用法,常用于書(shū)面語(yǔ)中。

例:

This hymn book is the property of Pitt Street Methodist Church. (這本圣歌歸皮特街衛(wèi)理公會(huì)教堂所有。)

If he defaults on the loan, the land will become the property of the bank. (他如果到期未還貸款,這片地將被銀行沒(méi)收。)

3. be mine/yours/John's etc.: if something is mine/yours/John's etc., it belongs to me, you, John etc.

例:

"Hey, that's my pen!"? "Sorry! I didn't know it was yours."-嘿,那是我的筆!? -抱歉,我不知道是你的。)

"Whose bike is that?" "It's Martin's."-那是誰(shuí)的自行車? -是馬丁的自行車。)

The money wasn't Sara's to lend you in the first place (=Sara didn't have the right to lend it). (莎拉本就無(wú)權(quán)把錢借給你。)

4. my/your/his etc. : belonging to me, you, him etc.

例:

Please can you move your car? It's blocking my driveway. (能把你的車開(kāi)到旁邊一點(diǎn)嗎?擋著我的車道了。)

I've got a problem with my dishwasher. (我的洗碗機(jī)有點(diǎn)壞了。)

My grandmother lives near your place - just around the corner in fact. (我奶奶家離你家很近,從你家門(mén)口拐個(gè)彎就到。)

5. your own: belonging to you and not to anyone else

例:

You can rent skis or you can bring your own. (滑雪用具你可以租,也可以自己帶來(lái)。)

Joe left the company to set up his own business. (喬離職了,自己去開(kāi)公司。)

6. of your own:

例:

We have problems of our own. (我們也有自己要解決的問(wèn)題。)

a room/car/computer etc. of your own: one that belongs to you and no one else, especially when this is something you want to own

Our neighbors let us use their garage, but we really need one of our own. (鄰居讓我們把車停在他們家的車庫(kù),但是我們確實(shí)也需要自己有一個(gè)車庫(kù)。)

I'd like to have a place of my own (= my own home). (我想有個(gè)自己的房子。)

The charity provides accommodation for homeless people, and helps them find homes of their own. (這個(gè)慈善組織給無(wú)家可歸的人提供臨時(shí)住所,還幫他們找永久的住所。)

7. personal: belonging only to you

例:

My personal view is that we shouldn’t offer him the job. (我的個(gè)人意見(jiàn)是,我們不該聘用他。)

I know from personal experience that you can’t trust Ralph. (我的經(jīng)驗(yàn)告訴我,別相信拉爾夫。)

The car is for personal use only. (這輛車只能私人用。)

somebody's personal possessions/property/belongings

The dead man's personal possessions were sent back to his family. (死者的私人物品都寄回給他家人了。)

When I went to her room all her personal belongings had gone. (我去她房間一看,她的東西都不在了。)
