(Part 4)

He expected the assistant to look at him in blank astonishment. However, it was his turn to be surprised, for the woman's eyes immediately lit up and she fetched several bottles which she placed on the counter for Harry to inspect. For once, Harry had to admit defeat. He picked up what seemed to be the smallest bottle and discreetly asked the price. He was glad to get away with a mere twenty pounds and he beat a hasty retreat, clutching the precious bottle under his arm. From then on, Harry decided that this little game he had invented might prove to be expensive. The curious bottle, which now adorns the bookcase in his study, was his first and last purchase of rare cosmetics.

解析:

He expected the assistant to look at him in blank astonishment.

blank: a blank face or look shows no emotion, understanding or interest (呆住的)

blank face/look/expression/eyes (呆住的臉/樣子/表情/眼神)

Zoe looked at me with a blank expression.? Zoe

She gazed at me in blank astonishment.

分別是look puzzledshake her head in bewilderment,這兩個(gè)詞組程度差不多,都表示“confused”;現(xiàn)在呢,look at him in blank astonishment,更進(jìn)一步(盡管只是Harry的想象),可見(jiàn)作者用詞多講究。 如“醉酒”:sober(沒(méi)醉)→tipsy(小醉)→drunk(醉)→loaded(大醉)→hangover(宿醉第二天頭疼)。

2. 第二句可以精簡(jiǎn)成“it was his turn to be surprised.

1)“for...”引導(dǎo)原因狀語(yǔ)從句,該從句分成兩部分,①the woman's eyes immediately lit up she fetched several bottles which she placed on the counter for Harry to inspect. which后面是bottles的定語(yǔ)從句。

2)“However it was his turn to be surprised.”

3light up: if sb’s face or eyes light up, they show pleasure, excitement etc.

His eyes lit up with laughter.

Her face lit up with pleasure.

For once, Harry had to admit defeat. He picked up what seemed to be the smallest bottle and discreetly asked the price.

pick up(拿起)

4. 第五句可以精簡(jiǎn)成“He was glad to get away and he beat a hasty retreat.

?1)“with a mere twenty pounds”做“get away”的狀語(yǔ);“clutching the precious bottle under his arm”做“beat a hasty retreat”的狀語(yǔ)。

(2)beat a retreat: to leave a place quickly retreat是“撤退”的意思,對(duì)記憶這個(gè)詞組有幫助)

例:

I saw my aunt coming so I beat a hasty retreat.

From then on”是狀語(yǔ)。“this little game he had invented might prove to be expensive”是decide的賓語(yǔ),其中“he had invented”是game的定語(yǔ)從句。

6. 第七句可以精簡(jiǎn)成“The curious bottle was his first and last purchase of rare cosmetics.

1)“which now adorns the bookcase in his study”是bottle的定語(yǔ)從句

2adorn=decorate (裝飾)

?

總結(jié):
