(一)升職:

1. promote: to give someone who works in an organization a more important job than the one they had before

例:

The company promotes women and minorities whenever possible. (這個公司一有機會就提升女員工和少數(shù)民族員工。)

be promoted

I was promoted today! (今天我升職啦!)

Did you hear that David's been promoted? (聽說了嗎?大衛(wèi)升職了。)

promote somebody to something

He was promoted to head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1991. 1991年他被提升為辛辛那提猛虎隊主教練。)

He was promoted to senior editor. (他被升為高級編輯。)

The army major was promoted to lieutenant colonel. (這位陸軍少校被提升為中校。)

2. promotion: when someone is given a more important job in an organization

例:

Civil service tests determine promotion in government jobs. (在政府部門工作,提升要通過公務(wù)員考試。)

There was little chance for promotion within the company. (在這個公司,想要升職希望渺茫。)

She was given a well-deserved promotion. (她升職,是眾望所歸。)

She got a promotion last year. (她去年升職了。)

3. make somebody something: to move someone to another job, usually a better, more important one within the same organization

例:

My uncle is in the army. He made major last year. (我叔叔在部隊服役。去年,他被升為陸軍少校。)

No-one thought they would make him manager so soon after joining the company. (他剛進公司沒多久,沒人覺得會升他做經(jīng)理。)

He's been made Head of Security at the Chicago National Bank. (他被任命為芝加哥國家銀行的保安隊長。)

4. advancement: when someone moves up to a better, more important job

備注:''advancement''是正式的用法。

例:

Many people are forced to move from one city to another in search of better jobs or career advancement. (人們?yōu)榱苏业礁玫墓ぷ?,或者獲得職業(yè)晉升,不斷輾轉(zhuǎn)于各個城市。)

His advancement to captain came last year. (他是去年被提拔為船長的。)

He is being considered for advancement. (他有望獲得晉升。)

5. move/go/climb up the ladder : to gradually become more and more successful, and get better, more important jobs

備注:或者作''work your way up the ladder''。

例:

Education is vital to help these children to move up the career ladder. (文憑對于這些年輕人來說很重要,可以幫他們獲得晉升。)

Tom started working for the company at age 18, and slowly worked his way up the ladder. (湯姆18歲起就在這個公司上班,然后慢慢獲得提升。)

She worked her way up from the lowest rung on the ladder. (她從最底層做起,慢慢往上爬。)

(二)加薪:

1. rise: n. an increase in the amount of money you are paid for your work

備注:''rise''是英式英語的用法,美式英語寫作''raise''。

例:

I asked my boss for a raise. (我要老板給我加薪。)

a raise in salary=a pay raise(加薪)

He received loud applause when he told the crowd that low wage-earners deserve a raise. (他說“低收入者理應(yīng)得到漲薪”,人們熱烈鼓掌。)

give somebody a rise

The State Government simply can't afford to give all teachers a raise. (美國政府無法給所有教師都漲工資。)

2. hike: n. a sudden increase in something such as prices, wages, or taxes

例:

tax/price/wage etc. hike

a wage hike(漲工資)

Pilots will get an 11% pay hike over four years. (飛行員每4年漲11%工資。)

Trade Unions are proposing a hike in the minimum wage. (工會提議提高最低工資。)

3. increment: an amount that is added regularly to someone's pay every year, every six months etc. (定期的加薪)

備注:''increment''是正式的用法。

例:

The contract includes a salary increment every six months. (合同上寫著每6個月加一次薪。)


Employees receive an annual increment of three percent. (員工每年漲3%工資。)
