自作孽不可活——“承擔后果”英語怎能么說?

大家都會犯錯誤,結果肯定要自己來承擔。看看英語怎么表達“承擔結果”這個意思。

1. suffer:

例:

If you tell lies, it is you who will suffer in the end.(說謊最后倒霉的是自己。)

He broke the law, so he has to suffer the consequences.(他犯了法,就得受懲罰。)

make somebody suffer

When his mother caught him cheating she really made him suffer.(他母親發(fā)現(xiàn)他作弊,好好修理了他一頓。)

suffer for

I shouldn't have drunk all the wine - I'll suffer for it tomorrow morning.(我不該喝那么多,明早起來有夠受的了。)

2. pay: to have a bad experience as a way of being punished for something bad that you have done, mistakes you have made etc.

例:

You'll pay for this!(你會為此付出代價的!)

They think I've forgotten what they did to me, but I'll make them pay.(他們覺得我已經(jīng)忘了他們的所作所為,我會讓他們付出代價的。)

If you offend him, he will make you pay.(冒犯他,你會遭殃的。)

備注:''pay the penalty''常見于英式英語中。

Tony didn't do any studying all year but paid the price when it came to exams.(托尼一整年沒怎么學習,考試的時候終于嘗到了苦頭。)

I knew the consequences of what I was about to do, but I was willing to pay the price.(我知道這么做的結果是什么,我愿意為我的行為付出代價。)

She paid a heavy price for telling the truth.(她說出真相的代價很大。)

Someone has to pay the penalty for these mistakes.(總得有人為這些錯誤買單。)

3. count the cost: to suffer or start having problems as a result of mistakes or decisions you made at an earlier time

備注:該詞常見于英式英語中。

例:

The school overspent on its budget last year, and now it has to count the cost.(學校去年超預算,現(xiàn)在遭殃了。)

count the cost of

We are now counting the cost of our earlier mistakes.(因為早先的錯誤,現(xiàn)在我們遭殃了。)

4. cost somebody dearly/dear: if a mistake costs someone dearly or costs someone dear, they suffer a great deal because of it

例:

This scandal could cost the government dearly.(這個丑聞讓政府吃夠了苦頭。)

It was only a small mistake, but it cost us very dear.(這只是個小錯誤,但是卻讓我們吃夠了苦頭。)

5. know/find out to your cost: if you know or find out something to your cost, you realize that something that happened or something you did at an earlier time is now causing problems or is likely to cause problems in the future

例:

As we now know to our cost, the disease is highly contagious.(雖然我們知道錯了,但是疾病已經(jīng)廣泛流行開了。)
