1. almost/nearly:

例:

His hair was almost white. (他頭發(fā)幾乎全白。)

The moon was almost full that night. (那夜接近月圓。)

I've almost finished reading the newspaper. (我把報紙差不多看完了。)

Persuading Paul to change his mind is nearly impossible. (勸保羅改主意幾乎不可能。)

almost all/every/everything/everyone

Almost all the wine had been drunk. (差不多所有的酒都喝完了。)

2. not quite: not completely, but almost - use this to say that something is not true, but it is almost true

例:

That's a good answer but it's not quite correct. (這個答案不錯,但不全對。)

It's not quite red, it's more like a maroon color. (這顏色接近紅色,更像栗色。)

The orbits of the planets are almost circular, but not quite. (行星運行軌道幾乎呈圓形,但不是正圓。)

3. practically/virtually:

例:

The cupboard was practically empty. (柜子幾乎是空的。)

practically all/everything/everyone etc.: very nearly all

4. just about/more or less/pretty much:

備注:''just about/more or less/pretty much''常用于口語中。

例:

All the rooms are more or less the same size. (所有房間大小幾乎一樣。)

Until the 18th century, the region remained more or less independent. (這個地區(qū)在18世紀以前基本是獨立的。)

His jacket was pretty much the same color as his trousers. (他夾克和褲子的顏色幾乎一樣。)

just about all/everything/everyone etc.: very nearly all - use this when saying that the difference is not important

The second-hand shop on the corner sells just about everything. (街角的那家二手店幾乎什么都賣。)

She's traveled in just about every country in Europe. (她幾乎已經(jīng)游遍歐洲。)

It rains more or less every day here in November. 11月間這里幾乎天天下雨。)

5. be close: if a guess at a number, amount, etc. is close, it is almost correct but not exactly right

例:

6. be on the verge/brink of: to be very close to an extremely bad situation

例:

The two countries are on the brink of war. (這兩國大戰(zhàn)一觸即發(fā)。)

be on the verge of tears/death/hysteria etc.

Kerry is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. (=came close to a nervous breakdown)(凱利差點就精神崩潰了。)
