Barely:僅僅;勉強(qiáng);幾乎不;貧乏地;公開地

例:

You barely got the rest of us here in time.

你勉強(qiáng)能及時(shí)把我們其他人帶來這里。

Plants in such high temperature are barely breathing.

再這樣的高溫下,植物幾乎不能呼吸。

She is too weak, barely can she stand up.

她太虛弱了,幾乎站不起來。

Hardly:幾乎不;簡(jiǎn)直不;剛剛

Hardly when:一…就,剛…就(與No sooner than意思相同)

例:

I hardly recognize you.

我?guī)缀跽J(rèn)不出你來。

Hardly had I got to the bus station when it left.

我剛到汽車站,車就離開了。

No sooner had I got to the bus station than the bus left.

我剛到汽車站,車就離開了。

No sooner than用來表示做過的事情,不能用于表示將來要做的事情,hardlyno sooner than放句首,主句均用倒裝。

Scarcely:幾乎不;簡(jiǎn)直不;簡(jiǎn)直沒有

例:

I could scarcely breathe.

我?guī)缀醮贿^氣來。

Scarcely had he come in, when the phone rang.

他剛進(jìn)來,電話鈴聲就響了。

Scarcely when hardly when意義和用法一樣

Merely:僅僅;只不過;只是

例:

You are merely reciting what you have learned by rote.

你只是在背誦自己死記硬背下來的東西。

Don’t be overly dramatizing; he merely brushes against you.

別夸張了,他只不過是碰了你一下而已。

Almost:差不多;幾乎

例:

I had been here for almost five years.

我來這里差不多五年了。

Almost no one say no.

幾乎沒人說不。

Barely表示肯定意義,常與enough、sufficient等連用,如be barely enough:勉強(qiáng)夠

Hardly強(qiáng)調(diào)幾乎不可能,表示否定意義,常與情態(tài)動(dòng)詞連用,如could hardly hear:幾乎聽不見

Scarcely強(qiáng)調(diào)頻度或數(shù)量不夠,如scarcely ever opened the window 幾乎從未打開過這扇窗

Merely表示肯定意義,如be merely the beginning 僅僅是個(gè)開頭

Almost表示肯定意義,如almost drop from the table 差一點(diǎn)從桌子上掉下去
